Don’t Move to Boca!

The passage of time is strange.
The beautiful people that you once looked up to as the pinnacle for all things youthful and virile are still beautiful but a little… off kilter.
Gravity has taken its toll as everything has shifted slightly south.
The little kids I once babysat now have kids of their own and I could swear that Chassanim and Kallahs are Bar Mitzvah boys marrying Sweet 16 girls.

Now there is no denying that my parents are getting old, they have just purchased an apartment in Boca Raton.

To most the housing unit for the aged is called ‘Century Village’, probably because most people who inhabit it recall the American Civil War -first hand. I, on the other hand call it ‘Cemetery Village’ sort of like
G-d’s waiting room or
‘Hotel California’- once you check in you can never check out.

My Dad loves the whole, ‘I’m retired so I can do and say whatever I want’ thing. This is so much so, that he actually enjoys the daily scrimmage for seats at the ‘All You Can Eat Breakfast’ for $2.50 available in the village.
According to legend, these places employ bouncers to keep the old age pensioners from coming to blows with each other over who was first in line.

I say good for them because it gives their lives PURPOSE.
Everyone should have a PURPOSE.

But NOT MY PARENTS!!!!!!

Even with her old country accent, my mothers always been young at heart and has never come to terms with aging. She would go nuts in Boca where the most popular sports are: comparing ailments, comparing medications and comparing doctors.

My Dad on the other hand, loves all of that.
He’s waited his whole life and looked forward to ….. getting old.
Well, I guess it does beat the alternative.

My Dad showed me the photo of his new apartment and there was a person lying on the sofa. I screamed in horror, “Dad! Couldn’t they have removed the body BEFORE you bought the apartment?” My Dad rolled his eyes and told me that it was just the real estate agent who happens to be my cousin, which explains his level of comfort in my parent’s new abode. However, it also explains the lethargy that sets in when people enter Boca.

At one point my Dad talked about selling his home, (my birthplace!) in Monsey and moving to Boca permanently.

Even though I live in London, I still need to know that my home still exists! I told my Dad that he might as well stick a bottle of liquor in my hand (preferably egg, or coffee’s good too- yum!), drop me off at the Bowery and call me homeless.

My parents are vibrant, youthful people. I can’t let them willingly become part of the old age brigade!!!!

I don’t mind if they spend winters in Boca Raton, I just feel that they just need to be around young people the rest of the time.

So please join me in petitioning my father and write to:

papadontmovetoboca@hotmail.com

I thank you for your support in these trying times.

there are young people in boca (or nearby)... it's just a matter of venturing out of 'century village'!

nevertheless... kasambaMa & kasambaPa: stay young at heart, don't go to boca!!!

You're right, Kasamba. Don't let your folks give up the Monsey address yet. Let them experience a few winter seasons there in Boca. Your folks might decide it's not for them, but they have to experiment for several months and see for themselves.
Truth is, you don't have to move to Boca to compare ailments, doctors and medications. Convince them of that! But let them be well to enjoy Florida and all that it offers -- the flea markets for starters...!

im sure theyve worked hard enough all their lives, they finally get to relax, enjoy nice weather, hang out with other poele taking it easy.. be happy for them, let them party it out (just dont let them wear the flowered shirts, yellow pants, white shoes, and straw hats that are so popular out there!)

B"H, Florida is one place to which I don't have to worry about my parents moving. If they move anywhere, it'll be to Israel iy"H.

Maybe it's called century village because it's only for people approaching their first century?

I will be sure to send an email!

I love the email address- Papa Don't Preach for the Kasamba elder generation!

Will they at least be close to Disneyworld? (sorry, my US geog sucks)

I really hear you about not wanting your parents to move away from where you grew up. I am very nostalgic like that too. Am I the only one who is still laughing picturing the photo of the "body" on the couch? :)

You're funny (as usual) but I definitely know what you're feeling. I'm freaking out that my grandparents are nearing 80- they were always my lively, spoiling grandparents and now, although still acting young, are slowing down considerably. I like you, hate change like this, and just want to stay frozen in the current content life. Good luck, I sent an email ;)

My Grandparents moved to Century Village, but in those days it was in Deefield Beach. You're right; it was the beginning of the end.

BTW have you seen the Seinfeld episodes that take place in Del Boca Vista? Classic.

"Couldn't they have removed the body first??!" Haha! well I wouldn't want to deny your father his rights to scramble for seats at the breakfast special, but i agree that it can be detrimental to move to a place like this, where everything screams "YOU'RE OLD! Oh, you didn't realize? Well YOU ARE!" But is boca really like that? And are your parents really the type to fall into this pattern - or do they just want to enjoy a few years in the sun?

I'm like ur dad. I'm going to enjoy being old...absolutely.

I would also be greatly saddened if my parents sold my boyhood home. So definitely gonna sign that petition

thank you for the visit and compliments. It is scary to watch our folks age. There are only so many time you can gently chide and say "dad, you don't really want to eat that" or offer to take a walk with him. If anyone finds good ideas on the subject please let me know.

The hardest (and thank god I haven't seen this with my own folks) is that "tipping point" after which it's too much effort to stay active so they sit and then because they are not active it becomes harder to be active.

Long life and good health to all!

An interesting comment yuou made is you think your parents need to be around younger people at times. I agree. When an older has a child it keeps them young. Older hanging around older makes them older. kasamba you are one funny writer!

Unfortunately, you, and many of your respondents, have little/no knowledge of Century Village West (CVW). My wife and I have been wintering in CVW for the last 7+ years.

CVW is a gated, 55+ community, and has over 5700 condo apartments. Many of us are considered physically old by anyone's standards. However, I suspect that a majority of these "old" people would not have made it to their current age, had they not moved to CVW.

Here, in CVW, there is a chance for everyone to keep his/her mind young. For those who are still able, there are numerous swimming pools, 3 tennis courts, a staffed, well equipped exercise equipment room, and many exercise classes (including yoga).

For those looking for entertainment, there is a 1200 seat theater with free movies, and numerous stage shows in the evenings.

There is a Conservative Temple, and an Orthodox Synagogue on the grounds, and a Chabad House outside the gate.

There is bus service throughout the community, plus bus service to a number of nearby shopping plazas. At least one of which has a Kosher meat market.

I think I uderstand your selfish attitude for not wanting your parents to give up their Munsey home of many years, but had THEY been selfish many years ago, perhaps you wouldn't have been here to complain.

Lighten up, and give your parents a chance to enjoy, and hopefully extend, their remaining years.

I would love to correspond with anyone sincerely wanting to know more about CVW.

Oh Myron, Myron, Myron!
My Dad would looooooove it there! My mom has been there and really doesn't! She would miss her friends and the life that she has in Monsey! Mom begged me to try to disuuade Dad!!! I promise that if I felt she'd be happy, I would send them happily a'packing!
I hope that I didn't put anyone off going there! I hope that you can set them straight!
Thanks for visiting!!!
